Dear friends
I could not express my joy at seeing this article on Internet.
Another Organics is Possible
A policy in favour of small producers can invigorate Indian farming
By P V Satheesh, Director, Deccan Development Society, Hyderabad, Andhra
Pradesh
My thanks and best wishes to PVS and others who have demystified organic
management and come out forcefully against the scientific community
that has consistently let Indian farmers down.
I live and work in Delhi. Have adopted a few Panchayats near Patna and
in Kullu district to experiment with simple, sustainable farming systems,
consistent with local soil conditions, topography and climate. Have
been working on these for about five years.
A friend in Australia-Steve Solomon-has devoted his entire life to holistic
agriculture and
manages an e-library called Soil and Health. Please do visit this web
resource and enjoy the massive collection on sustainable farming. You
will also find a section on "A case for
organics", a collection of scientific papers that I contributed
to this library that prove that we have no choice but to go organic.
And yes, I have come to fear the charlatans (Mollison, Kuntz, Fukuoka,
Jeavons, etc ) who promise that their system of radical agriculture
can feed the entire world from the sum total of flowerpots owned by
earthlings. Organic farming, and sustainable farming is a lost wisdom
that needs to dragged back to the centrestage. Our farmers worked with
native wisdom. That wisdom was lost in the white hot heat of chemical
farming started foolishly by Leibig and exploited to the hilt by Chemical
MNCs.
I saw the poor farmers near Patna (potato and onion farmers) wasting
32% of the total input cost on chemicals, sold casually by neighbourhood
retailers, many of these pesticides are known nerve poisons. This case
study can be emailed to any person interested in understanding the racket
in scientific farming.
With best wishes to every one who believes in sustainable farming.
